Godhuma Ravva Upma-Fada Upma

Godhuma Ravva is nothing but broken wheat also known as Fada. This dish is a savory breakfast pudding and unlike semolina this cereal has much more texture and taste to it and although the procedure is the same for semolina and broken wheat upma this recipe takes longer to cook when compared to semolina. This is a great substitute for sugar ladden cereals.

Preparation time:30 minutes
Serves:2

Ingredients:
1 cup broken wheat
1 cup finely chopped vegetables( I used carrot ,zucchini, red pepper, peas)
1/2 diced onion
4-5 green chillies
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon black gram
1 teaspoon chana dal
2 tablespoons cashew nuts(optional)
2 tablespoons peanuts(optional)
2 teaspoons ghee/oil
1 sprig curry leaves
2 teaspoons tomato puree(optional)

Procedure:
1.In a pan, heat oil/ghee and add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Now add the chana dal, black gram, cumin seeds, cashew and peanuts and saute for about 1 minute and add the curry leaves and let splutter.

2.Now add the onions and green chilli and saute for 1 minute and then add the rest of the vegetables and saute for 1 minute.

3.Add the broken wheat and saute for 2-3 minutes.

4.Add enough salt and add 2 1/2 cups of water and tomato puree and check salt and place the lid and let cook on a medium low flame for about 20-2 minutes until done. You can garnish with roasted peanuts and serve with a squeeze of lemon juice.

Tips:
If the wheat isnt cooked, add little more water and let cook for a few more minutes.
Do not peep between by opening the lid it will remove the steam and deter the process of cooking.
